Insomnia is a common sleep condition in which people have difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or their quality of sleep is not restful to the point that it affects their daytime functioning.
Insomnia can be short-term, usually due to a traumatic event, stress, or schedule change, or chronic, which occurs for at least 3 or more nights a week for longer than 3 months without a health or medical explanation. Chronic insomnia raises the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and cancer.
There are factors that can increase a person’s risk of having insomnia. Age (over 60), gender (being a woman), schedule changes, working irregular or overnight shifts, having certain physical or mental health conditions, or being under a lot of stress all increase the risk of having insomnia.
Insomnia is generally diagnosed through a physical exam, interview with a doctor, and/or sleep study, in which sleep is monitored at home or at a facility to evaluate brain activity, oxygen levels, eye and leg movements, breathing and heart rate. The doctor may also ask the patient to keep a sleep diary to evaluate their sleep habits.
There are multiple ways to treat insomnia. Healthy sleep habits, including stress management, keeping a consistent sleep schedule, minimizing electronics in the bedroom, regular exercise, avoiding alcohol and caffeine close to bedtime, avoiding naps, and creating a relaxing bedtime ritual can all help to fall asleep and stay asleep. Cognitive behavioral therapy and medication are often used to treat insomnia.
In addition, there are alternative methods to treat insomnia like acupuncture, melatonin and valerian (over the counter supplements), meditation, and yoga or tai chi.
Bio-Touch is an extremely effective complementary method that can be used with any traditional or alternative treatment for insomnia. Bio-Touch is easy to learn and has been shown to reduce pain and stress.
