I was alone, so I tiptoed around the room, taking everything in. Hawaiian-sounding music played softly from the speakers of a stereo system. A large, wooden bookcase held a variety of health and wellness books. On the other side of the room, there were additional wooden shelves that displayed vitamin supplements, teas, and soaps for sale. The concrete floor was beautifully etched in a tiled design, and the walls were painted in bold colors of purple, turquoise, red, and mustard. There were two comfy-looking couches as well as a dozen or so chairs that had been arranged in a large circle. A bald-headed female mannequin—the kind you’d see in any department store—stood at the front of the room draped in a colorful wrap. I did a double take, wondering what she would be used for, when a smiling woman suddenly appeared from a back room.

“Hello. I’m sorry I didn’t hear you come in. Welcome to the Bio-Touch Center. I’m Sandy.”

“Hi. I’m Debra.”

She penciled something on a clipboard, and offered me some refreshments. Just as I reached for the bright green grapes, the front door opened. Several women breezed in chattering to each other. Sandy greeted them by name, joining their conversation. Feeling like the outside I was, I made my way to one of the couches. It felt cushiony enough, but I sat as rigid as a flagpole, holding my body as close to the over-stuffed arm as possible. I placed my purse next to me so no one could sit too close.

More students arrived. From my perch, I could see how they were all “new age,” earthy, tree-hugger types. They were dressed for comfort in over-sized tee shirts, and baggy, relaxed shorts. Their flip-flops slapped against their heels as they walked. I was clad in a crisp, raspberry-colored blouse, pressed slacks, and high-heeled sandals. The women wore little, if any, jewelry, nail polish, or make-up. Adorned with all of the above, I stuck out like a pink-iced donut among bagels.
